Facebook Graph Search
Mark Zuckerberg introduced the new Facebook Graph Search today.
The idea is to not only make it easier to search, but to find connections or interests with friends and people you don't know, given the massive amount of personalized data.

How to Scale a Billion Dollar Startup Like Instagram
Instagram, the photo-sharing startup co-founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger that was acquired by Facebook for a billion dollars, is an amazing story for many reasons.
However, despite the recent outage of Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the reasons it was able to scale so fast was by using keeping things simple in-house and taking advantage of connecting to resources outside.
In April (2012) after the Facebook acquisition, Mike Krieger gave a talk on "Scaling Instagram" to give some perspective on the back-end and engineering while growing so fast and having to make adjustments while going at full-speed.
Perhaps this sums it up best:
"The cleanest solution with the fewest moving parts as possible."

Yahoo has filed a patent lawsuit against Facebook, alleging the ideas for the social network were taken from them. Regardless of your view of Yahoo or Facebook or how this will be eventually resolved or decided, it's interesting to learn how patents apply to social networks.

Nike Courage Commercial | I've Got Soul, But I'm Not a Soldier
I was thinking of this commercial and the song below from The Killers...2 seconds later I see "I've got soul, but I'm not a solider" on Luke Shepard's status message on Facebook. So, Luke, this one's for you :)
